GET OUTSIDE IN AMERICA'S GREAT OUTDOORS

Take your kids fishing! This is the best time of the year to fish the
Trinity River for steelhead and salmon. Popular with fisherman and
pleasure boaters alike, the 43 miles of the Wild and Scenic Trinity
River from Lewiston to Pigeon Point is a class I and II segment that
flows out of the Trinity and Lewiston Lakes. This clear, cold section
of the river is world famous for its fly fishing.

From the high country of Yosemite National Park, the Merced River
shows no mercy on its headlong rush through glacially-carved canyons,
rugged mountains and foothills to the San Joaquin Valley. Ample access
points allow you to punch rapids at your own pace.

WILDLIFE TRIVIA QUESTION of the WEEK:
After a particularly large meal, California condors:

(a.) usually behave as if they are about to migrate south for the winter
(b.) may have to spend hours on the ground or a low branch before they
can fly again
(c.) tend to focus their next hunt for a meal on slower-moving animals
that are easy to catch
(d.) try to cover any remains with leaves and branches, to save it for
their next meal
(e.) bury any remains, so as not to attract scavenger animals to their
hunting territory
(f.) Burp hugely, a cultural affectation that shows they appreciate
the quality of the meal, as well as the quantity offered them

RENEWABLE ENERGY

"Ocotillo Wind Project Area Deemed Sacred"
(Imperial Valley Press, 4/25/13)
The project area where the controversial 112 wind turbine project is
located was recently deemed a "sacred site" by the Native American
Heritage Commission, a ruling seen as symbolic victory by some
opposing the project. The Native American Heritage Commission is the
primary government agency responsible for identifying and cataloging
Native American cultural resources.

"Norco: Horse Parade Marches Through Town" (Press Enterprise, 4/20/13)
Hundreds of horses and riders rode Sixth Street in Norco, Saturday,

Management's adoption program, astonished onlookers with sheer
numbers. http://www.elabs10.com/ct.html?ufl=1&rtr=on&s=x8pbwi,1gnql,3xn3,mdng,igt,283f,37zd

"Loomis' Earth Day Celebration" (News.bytes Extra)
The BLM Wild Horse and Burro program was invited to participate in the
town of Loomis' Earth Day Celebration. Volunteers Michele and Steve
DeCamp brought their wild horse and burro to the event as ambassadors,
and assisted BLM staff with running the booth. We answered many
people's questions and even provided nostalgia to some elderly
citizens who used to own horses. We are very grateful that the Town of
Loomis includes us in their celebration.

(Daily Press,4/19/13)
Rep. Paul Cook (R-Yucca Valley) proposed a plan Friday to stop the
westward expansion of the Twentynine Palms Marine base into Johnson

included multiple field trips into the Hills, lectures at the Lone
Pine Film History Museum, and tabling by over 30 vendors at the local
civic center. The BLM's "walk-and work" field trip, done in
partnership with Friends of the Inyo, provided a lesson in geology to
volunteers who also helped to remove illegal-use off road vehicle
tracks. http://www.elabs10.com/ct.html?ufl=1&rtr=on&s=x8pbwi,1gnql,3xn3,473l,l602,283f,37zd

"Enviroment Groups Sue to Stop New Calif. Oil Leases" (The Sacramento
Bee, 4/18/13)
Two environmental groups are suing the federal government over the
December auction of nearly 18,000 acres of oil leases on prime public
lands in Central California. The Center for Biological Diversity and
the Sierra Club filed a lawsuit on Thursday alleging that the Bureau
of Land Management auctioned off the rights to drill for oil and gas
without adequately considering the potential risks to the region's
water supply, wildlife and air posed by hydraulic fracturing, or
fracking.

"In Time it Takes Feds to Approve Oil-Drilling Permits You Could Watch
'Die Hard' 3,349 Times" (CNSNews.com, 4/19/13)
The House Committee on Natural Resources revealed that the time it
takes to obtain a permit for oil and gas exploration on state lands is
about 12 to 15 days - a short time compared with the average 307 days
to obtain a permit for onshore drilling on federal land. That means a
person could watch the movie "Die Hard" 3,349 times, according to the
committee, which provided facts at the hearing to demonstrate just how
lengthy the wait is for a federal drilling permit.
