Little Sand Fire Daily Update - June14, 2012
June 14 - by order of the Hinsdale County Sheriff (in consultation
withIncident Command Team Leaders, San Juan National Forest staff and
Archuleta Emergency Management) residents of the Weminuche Valley were
given pre-evacuation notices. The area under pre-evacuation notice is
primarily private property, including two ranches.
This pre-evacuation notice was issued because the Little Sand fire has
reached a predetermined point, and is moving in a northeasterly
direction that, given the expected weather forecast, terrain and
vegetation types, could mean the fire will enter the Weminuche Valley.
Under a pre-evacuation, people should be prepared to leave within 15
minutes should a mandatory evacuation be ordered. Pre-evacuation
notices are also a proactive measure to ensure public and firefighter
safety.
Firefighters have been working for weeks implementing structure
protection measures to minimize potential impacts to private property
and infrastructure. There will be crews working in the pre-evacuation
area 24 hours.
Smoke became the biggest issue ofthe day, as atmospheric conditions
prevented typical ventilation, and the lower elevations were filled.
The low-hanging smoke rolled outward instead of upward today,
travelling as far west as Durango.
The Type 3 Incident Command Team(Markalunas) will transfer commandto a
National Incident Management Organization (NIMO) Team (Gage) over the
weekend. In addition to complex fire management, NIMO teams have
year-round "non-incident" duties in support of the National Fire and
Aviation Management Program. For more information about NIMO teams go
to www.nifc.gov/nimo
For the latest fire restrictions please check with your local
