Surprises Abound as Memorial Day Approaches
Wood The Rangers boast the league's top offense and have maintained their grip on the AL West, and they'll test themselves against Toronto this weekend. The Orioles, paced by solid pitching and a red-hot hitter in Adam Jones, have surprisingly taken control of the AL East. Cleveland has gotten an ace-level performance from Derek Lowe in vaulting to the top of the AL Central. Close races have developed in the NL East and Central divisions, and first-place St. Louis will have to weather the recent loss of Lance Berkman. Longtime Cub Kerry Wood retired last week. Phenom Bryce Harper has been hot this week for the first-place Nationals, and young right-hander Stephen Strasburg had right bicep tenderness but is not expected to miss a start. The Dodgers own the biggest division lead in all of baseball and have been thriving despite the loss of MVP candidate Matt Kemp to the DL. The Mets and the City of New York announced that the 2013 All-Star Game is coming to Citi Field in Queens, while voting for this year's All-Star Game in Kansas City continues.
