Accident near Yosemite National Park

An Indianapolis woman suffered major injuries when her car went offthe
side of Mather Road, and several hundred feet down an embankment
Tuesday near Yosemite.
Katherine McKay, 25, and her passenger, Virginia Gwaltney, 29, also of
Indianapolis, were taken by helicopter to hospitals in Modesto, the
California Highway Patrol reported.
McKay was listed this morning in critical condition at Doctors Medical
Center, according to hospital staff, meaning she is on life support
and her vital signs are unstable.
Gwaltney was discharged from Memorial Medical Center in Modesto.
The accident was reported at 5:30 p.m.
McKay was driving a Chrysler, the year and make unreported, west on
Mather Road east of Cherry Lake Road.
She failed to negotiate a left-hand curve in the road and the car
tumbled down the hillside, overturning several times, CHP said.
McKay, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the car.
Gwaltney was able to free herself from the vehicle, which landed on
its roof in a heavily forested area, and hiked back up the
mountainside, where she flagged down a UPS truck driver.
The UPS driver called 911 using a satellite phone.
McKay and Gwaltney are seasonal employees at the Evergreen Lodge near
Camp Mather.
