... may 2012 year group and summer ice outlook...
the year group for may is 1976 as it was in april. ice data from 1976
is very limited.
ice in the bering sea this year has set new records for extent and
persistence. record data for ice thickness has not been evaluated.
many who live and work in the bering sea have remarked that the ice
is also thicker this year than in their memories.
the bering sea retreat of sea ice through the spring and summer of
2012 will likely be much faster along the coasts with ice remaining
south of the bering strait into july.
in the chukchi sea the summer ice retreat will likely occur from the
west faster than from the south. the atlantic side of the arctic has
seen far less ice than normal this winter.
sea ice should then move
off the north coast of russia from west to east and open the east
siberian sea before the chukchi seais ice free.
in the beaufort sea the ice should open in canadian waters prior to
ice retreating north of alaska. it is likely there will develop an
off shore open route to canada 3 to4 weeks earlier than the alaska
north coast is ice free.
