Houston Crime Suspect in hospital after struggle with deputy ends in shooting

HOUSTON—A Harris County manremains hospitalized tonight after he was
shot by a deputy forallegedly trying to kidnap his girlfriend at
gunpoint.
A birthday party was taking place at a house on Grassington Street in
Channelview.
"They had a party down the street somewhere, and the guy was running
from the police and had the accident," said neighbor Thaddeus King.
Around 3:30 a.m., 32-year-old Jose Estrada reportedly pulled out a
semi-automatic hand gun after he and the homeowner got into an
argument over his girlfriend. He then allegedly dragged the girlfriend
to his car and made her get inside.
When deputies from Constable Precinct 3 arrived, they say Estrada was
holding the gun to her head and even fired a shot into the roof when
she tried to escape.
A chase ensued, ending when Estrada lost control of his car and
slammed into a parked truck. He then left his girlfriend behind and
tried flee on foot.
Investigators say a deputy caught up with Estrada in a grassy area
where they got into a struggle. When Estrada refused to drop his
weapon when ordered, the deputy shot him once in the stomach.
"I'm like I heard gunshots fire. I'm not about to walk outside. I
ain't about to get shot. When I did come out, the police had
everything taped off," said neighbor Quintana McCardell.
Estrada is expected to survive. His girlfriend, who hasn't been
identified, wasn't injured.
Estrada faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadlyweapon as
well as aggravated kidnapping. Investigators say there may also be
fugitive warrant for his arrest out of Georgia.
