May 23 was the third anniversary of the death of former President Roh Moo-hyun of South Korea. In traditional Korean custom, a third anniversary of death marks the end of mourning period and brings forth a sense of renewal and hope. In this light, those around the world who marked this occasion combined somber ceremonies with merrier cultural festivals. The photo above shows an event in Annandale, (Northern) Virginia. The legacy of Roh Moo-hyun lives on with the spirit and dedication of activists and citizens who have vowed to help create "the world where people live" (sa ram sa neun sae sang) -- a phrase often used by Roh in pursuit of social justice and fairness. To the participants, this year is more significant as the South Korea's presidential election in December will test whether a government in line with Roh's legacy may resurface.
