Jun 15 2012 - May 2012 GeoNet roundup
Last month's new sites, volcano surveillance results, earthquake
summaries, data products and other news from GeoNet, New Zealand's
geological hazard monitoring system.
New Zealand Earthquake Report - May 6 2012 at 11:33 am (NZST)
Magnitude 4.2, Sunday, May 6 2012 at 11:33 am (NZST), 10 km south-west
of Wellington.
Friday May 4 - Gas flight over White Island
The flying conditions were very good with a 13 knot south-easterly. SO
2 emission has increased considerably; CO 2 emission also increased,
but not to the same degree. These levels are still within the normal
range for background activity at White Island.
The lake level still appears to be low.

Saturday May 5 - Gas flight over Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe
The flight was made under very good conditions with a 15 knot
south-easterly. Only CO 2 was detected over Ruapehu although H 2 S
could be smelt at 8,500 feet altitude.
The Crater Lake was a green colourwith no obvious upwellings.

Tuesday May 22 - Tongariro lake and fumarole sampling
In this annual survey, we visit and sample several hydrothermal
features in the Tongariro massif.
Fumarole gases were taken from the Ngauruhoe outer rim fumarole and
from the Tongariro fumaroles at Red Crater on the Oturere face (near
the Lower Emerald Lake), anda fumarole on the Lower Te Māri crater.
The Central Crater fumarolehas continued to drop in temperature and
flow and was not sampled.
Temperatures were measured in theRed Crater area and were very similar
to last year's, averaging around 93.0 °C. Our sampled fumarole at Red
Crater was slightlylower in temperature and pressure compared to last
year, but the altered area on the Oturere face appeared larger than
last year with a vigorous steam discharge over a large area; the
sampled fumarole temperature and pressure was similar to last year.
Central and Te Māri Craters were also visited. Temperatures at Central
Crater were down and the fumaroles are now very weak. The Te Māri
Crater temperatures were similar to last year's visit.
The springs and lakes were sampledand there were no changes compared
to last year.
Wednesday May 23 - Ruapehu Crater Lake visit
Waters and gases were sampled in the Central and North vents. The
Central vent was just visible while sampling. Temperatures were 16.8°C
in the Central Vent and 16.1 °Cin the North Vent.
The lake was a blue green colour and was overflowing at approx 2.5 l/s.
Reported landslides from media sources
The Manawatu Gorge (State Highway 3) between Palmerston North and
Woodville was partially re-opened since it was completely closed by a
landslide on October 172011.
Friday May 11
*. SH 2 was affected by a slip that closed one lane on the Rimutaka
Hill between Featherston and Upper Hutt.
