Construction of access pit's underground walls now underway
Seattle Tunnel Partners has started building the underground walls of the circular pit (pdf 2.8 Mb) crews will use to access and repair the SR 99 tunneling machine. On Tuesday, May 13, large blue drill rigs began work to install the first of 75 piles that will enclose the 120-foot-deep pit.

Crews have been relocating utilities and injecting grout into the ground above the machine since the access pit received environmental clearance last week. Construction of the underground walls is beginning slightly earlier than STP's most recent schedule indicated. Pit excavation is slated to begin in late July and last through September. STP plans to resume tunneling by the end of March 2015.

Measuring progress

  • You can watch the access pit take shape at our newly installed time-lapse camera.
  • These graphics (pdf 2.8 Mb) illustrate the steps STP is taking to resume tunneling by the end of March 2015.

SR 99 off-ramp and lane closures
As you probably know, we built an SR 99 construction bypass to connect the waterfront section of the viaduct with the new section of SR 99 near the stadiums. This summer, crews will change the alignment of the bypass to make way for construction of the roadways that will connect to the tunnel.

Crews will be doing work to prepare for the upcoming alignment changes on Saturday, May 17. To accommodate that work, the following closures will take place:

  • The southbound SR 99 off-ramp to South Atlantic Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • The right lane of southbound SR 99 will be closed between South Jackson Street and South Royal Brougham Way from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Visit our website for a current list of closures related to the project. Closure information changes frequently, so remember to check for updates regularly.
