Nestled in the rolling foothills of eastern Stanislaus County, Turlock
Lake State Recreation Area is an ideal place for day- or week-long
outings.
Open all year and featuring camping, picnicking, fishing, swimming,
boating, water skiing, and clean country air, the area offers visitors
an opportunity to seethe wonderful variety of native plantlife that
once flourished alongside the rivers of the San Joaquin Valley.
Location/Directions
About 25 miles east of Modesto on the south side of the Tuolumne
River. From Modesto take Highway 132 East 14 miles to Waterford; in
Waterford turn right on Hickman Road (county road J-9) and drive 1
mile to Lake Road. Turn left on Lake Road and drive 10 miles to
Turlock Lake SRA.
Address
22600 Lake Road
La Grange CA 95329
Seasons/Climate/Recommended clothing
At elevation 250 feet, the recreation area boasts typical San Joaquin
Valley weather, with warm summers and mild winters.
During the summer months nighttime temperatures usually dropto the
high sixties and are comfortable for sleeping.
Facilities - Activities
Bounded on the north by the Tuolumne River and on the south by Turlock
Lake, the recreation area provides an ideal setting for water-oriented
outdoor activities. The recreation area features the lake with its 26
miles of shoreline and the foothill country leased from the Turlock
Irrigation District in 1950. Picnicking, day-use, and boat launch
ramps are offered at the lake. Overnight visitors are welcomeat the 66
site campground located on the shady south bank of the Tuolumne River
about 1 mile from the lake.
From several lookout point, visitors can view the surrounding savannas
and some of the cattle ranches and orchards nearby. And from Lake Road
which separates the campground from the day use area, an excellent
perspective is shown of the campground, the river and sloughs, and
miles of dredger tailing piles-the by product of a halfcentury of gold
mining.
Heaviest use period is Memorial Dayweekend through Labor Day. After
Labor Day and through October are perhaps the most ideal times to camp
with warm and golden days, cool and comfortable nights, and uncrowded
campgrounds.
Buy it where you burn it
Be aware that firewood can harbor insects and diseases that threaten
California's valuable forest resources. Transporting firewood can move
these pests to new locations.
WHAT CAN I DO?
Leave firewood at home - do not transport it to campgrounds or parks
Use firewood from local sources - that means the wood was cut within50
miles of where you'll have your fire
Bring only what you'll need, and burn responsibly

California Firewood Taskforce Outreach Survey
California's trees are at risk from insects and diseases that can
moveon firewood. In San Diego County alone, tens of thousands of oak
trees have been killed due to the Goldspotted Oak Borer, an insect
researchers believe was initially brought to California on infested
firewood. Other dangerous tree pests, such as the Emerald Ash Borer,
have been found on firewood at California's borders.

The problem with moving firewood
Why is moving firewood such a bad idea? Tree-killing insects and
diseases can lurk in firewood. Theseinsects and diseases can't move
faron their own, but when people move firewood they can jump hundreds
of miles. New infestations destroy our forests, property values, and
cost huge sums of money to control.
Moving Firewood Can Spread Invasive Species - Questions and Answers
About US
TASK FORCE
In November 2010, the California Forest Pest Council approved a
Resolution to create a California Firewood Task Force. States
acrossthe country have taken similar steps to limit the movement of
firewood in an effort to slow the spread of tree pests, and a new
National Firewood Task Force has formed to address risks associated
with firewood movement.

The Best Ice Chest
For Keeping Food Cold
With summer camping there is always the need for an ice chest to keep
perishable foods cold and this can become a chore in the hot summer
heat. I have some beach camping tips to help make sure yourfood items
stay cool and safe.
My Favorite Cooler For Camping
I have found the 1 1/2 inch thick styrofoam ice chests hold the ice
longer than the nice plastic department store coolers.
I'm able to have blocks of ice for several days in my cooler, keeping
our food cold during a long week-end camping trip.
The newer styrofoam coolers seem to be even better with an
interlocking lip on the lid, which should help you keep ice longer
thanI'm able to with my older style styrofoam chest.
This type may not be as durable but I have been using the same one for years.
I painted the outside with a few coats of white latex paint and
reinforced the lid hinge with packing tape.
I know from what I have experiencedthat you will find it easier to
keep ice and your food cold for several days with a 1 1/2 inch
styrofoam cooler.
New Super Insulated High Performance Ice Chests
Even though I have found the thick styrofoam coolers to work much
better than the plastic department store coolers, there are some
really great super insulated high performance chests available to buy.
You just can't go wrong with one of these newly designed ice chests.
You will find these high performance coolers to be very durable and
super insulated. They have an air tight rubber seal on the lid
designed to keep the cold from leaking out, which is a big help
withkeeping ice even longer than the thick styrofoam coolers.
Some models will hold ice for 7 days. There are models that can even
be locked and are bear proof. Now I would say that is one tough
cooler.
Well there aren't any bears at the Outer Banks, but if you ever do a
camping trip to the mountains it may be a consideration.
These high performance coolers are obviously more expensive, but you
are truly making an investment that can last for a life time of
camping.
So check them out. You may decide that even though the styrofoam
coolers are a lot less, it would be better to make a one time purchase
and have one of these super insulated high performance ice chests.
