What: Wildland Fire Update
Location: Wedge Creek Fire, 13 miles north of Ovando. Meadow Creek
Fire, three miles east of Coopers Lake. Both fires are located on the
Seeley Lake Ranger District
Wedge Creek Fire - A lightning-caused fire approximately 13 miles
north of Ovando on the Seeley Lake Ranger District. This fire is
burning in steep terrain and heavy timber in a remote area about two
miles south of the Scapegoat Wilderness boundary. The fire is
producing a smoke column visible from highway 200 and Ovando. A Type I
helicopter was used yesterday to drop water on the fire preventing
spread. Backing fire, moderate flame lengths and some torching were
observed. The fire has spread over the ridge to the east and someto
the north. Due to heavy fuel loadings with intermittent bug-killed
trees, steep slopes and inaccessible terrain it is unsafe to have
crews on the ground. No structures or property are currently
threatened by the fire. The fire is expected to become active again
today. Fire managers met members of the community yesterday eveningin
Ovando to discuss fire operationsand long-term strategies.
Size: Approximately 420 acres
Terrain: Steep and remote terrain. The fire is also burning in heavy fuel
Today's Plan: Survey fire area from a helicopter at approximately 1:00
p.m. and map the fire perimeter using GPS. Today's weather is
favorable with partly cloudy skies and a chance of rain showers in the
afternoon.
Closures:
Fenn Mountain Trail #88 the entire trail, beginning in T 16 N, R 12 W,
Section 3.
Conger Point Trail #468 the entire trail, beginning in T 17 N, R 11 W,
Section 31.
Dwight Creek Trail #414 from the junction with Conger Point Trail#468
to Omar Mountain T 17 N, R 12 W, Section 14.
Conger Creek Trail #403 from the junction with Conger Point Trail#468
T 17 N, R12 W, Sec. 23 to the junction with Canyon Point Trail#1437
T17 N, R 11 W, Sec. 29.
Meadow Creek Fire - Fire activity yesterday (8/20) was minimal and
crews are continuing to construct and improve handline. The fire is
now 80 percent contained and fire managers expect full containment and
demobilization over the next two to three days. One crew and two
helicopters remain assigned to the fire, which has been mapped at 224
acres using GPS.

DESPITE LARGE FIRES MANY FOREST AREAS STILL OPEN TO RECREATIONISTS

DESPITE LARGE FIRES MANY FOREST AREAS STILL OPEN TO RECREATIONISTS
Two large fires - Mustang Complex on the North Fork Ranger District
and the Halstead Fire on the Middle Fork and Challis-Yankee Fork
Ranger Districts - have impacted use of the Salmon-Challis National
Forest and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. However, many
important areas and aspects of recreation remain open.
Relative to the Mustang Complex, Middle Fork of the Salmon River
floating continues as does Main Salmon River traffic, though some
impacts are still being felt relative to fire activity. Boaters from
the Middle Fork are still being escorted through the Mustang Fire area
to ensure safety, though not with the types of long delays and
closures seen earlier in the week. Main Salmon launches are still
occurring from Cove Creek rather than Corn Creek reducing vehicle
traffic through the Fire area for firefighterand public safety.
Boaters are beingasked to plan for an extra day of river travel by
bringing additional food and water as well as to stop atthe North Fork
Ranger Station for up to date information and any additional permits
prior to heading downriver to launch.
Near Stanley, related to the Halstead and Bench Fires, a numberof
Emergency Area Closures have resulted in closure of the Salmon River
from Stanley to Thompson Creek to river floating at the current time.
Closures have also impacted 11 of the 36 campgrounds on the Sawtooth
National Recreation Area. However the "crown jewels" including
StanleyLake, Redfish Lake, and Alturas Lake and all other large
campgrounds remain open. Of those11 small campgrounds closed, threeare
near Highway 21 and are relatedto the Bench Fire. Forest managers want
to remind the public that all Forest roads and trails which form the
boundaries of the closure ordersare included in the closures. Highway
21 and Highway 75 are both open, though pilot cars are escorting cars
over Banner Summit between 7:00 am and 9:00 pm to ensure firefighter
and public safety as efforts continue to contain the Bench Fire.
For more information on the fires onthe Salmon-Challis National
Forest, including the latest closures, maps go to USFMSC.
